This is a church that we have seen since we moved here. I’ve never been inside, but I’m sure this place has a special place in many people’s lives. I am sad to see this beautiful building be torn down and replaced with homes. This is being done in the name of progress, and I’m sure many wonderful people will now call this area home. These days most people are not interested in change happening in their backyard. In order for change to occur it has to be in someone’s backyard, and change is always happening. I guess we just need to embrace it.
On a separate note, watching the team of demolition experts was quite interesting. I can’t believe how powerful that excavator is. Just a single swipe of the arm would take out several feet of the wall. The construction is also quite impressive. Even with no wall below the roof stands intact until the arm pulls down on it. As strong as the building is, it still makes me wonder what would have bappen in a powerful earthquake? I’m sad to see so many materials added to the landfill. The right group may have been able to salvage quite a bit of the raw materials that were used in the building. I suppose it all comes down to cost. The time and effort to recover material from a building like this would make it cost prohibitive, which I understand. Understanding doesn’t make it any easier to watch though.
