Always Learning, Always Creating

I’m Grant Rees, and I am a storyteller disguised as a designer. I approach every one of my projects, whether it’s a video campaign, a handbound book, or a business proposal, as a story worth telling. I studied Design and User Experience during my undergraduate degree, but most of what I’ve learned has come from diving into real, personal projects, asking better questions, and staying relentlessly curious.

Design Doesn't Always Begin With Software

For me, it usually starts with my sketchbook. Here I can get all my ideas out and in one place, mixing and matching until I get an idea that I can work with.

The Tools of My Creative Process

My toolkit is a physical representation of my creative growth-showcasing my drive to learn new things-shaped by curiosity and refined through hands on practice. My toolkit evolves and grows with me and what I want to learn next

Me and My Interests

My own story is one that I find full of fun. Too full sometimes if you were to look at the portion of the living room dedicated to my hobbies. I married my beautiful wife in 2022 and since then, we enjoy to do a variety of different things, including hiking, rappelling, rock climbing and camping together. If it takes us out into nature, we’ll be there and taking pictures all the way. I always wanted to be an inventor or designer of neat and practical things, and my hobbies reflect that. I love to read and write, creating elaborate fictional worlds, settings, and characters. I have also taken up leather crafting, designing all of my patterns on my own through trial and error. I am also a self taught blacksmith, learning to make knives and jewelry from hot steel.

Curiosity and a fierce DIY spirit have made my hobbies diverse. But I use basic design principles to make sure that each turns out the way that I want. When I am camping or hiking in the outdoors, I am designing lasting experiences. I start with a mood board and progress through final plans when I craft from metal or leather. And throughout all my projects or trips, and especially when I write, I do my best to tell meaningful stories that help people connect.
